Introduction
My name is Esme and I have been working with Star Gleam Education since February, 2024. Since then, I have been the tutor for both year 4 and year 5 WordBank; intensive courses for year 5s and 4s; and 1-1s. I am an extremely dedicated tutor and many parents have commented on my fun and engaging teaching style.
Experience with Star Gleam Education
1. WordBank
Since joining Star Gleam, I have been the dedicated WordBank tutor. WordBank classes are known for being engaging, creative and constructive. Each week, both the year 4 and 5 classes study advanced vocabulary which aims to improve their creative writing skills and prepare them for tricky vocabulary in comprehension passages. The students are given the opportunity to complete their own sentences which use these words and share these with the class. The class involves some games, such as an opening word-search starter; a (raising zoom hand) race for who gets to choose the next word and guess the meaning; and the popular ‘mystery spellings’ where students submit difficult spellings each week which the class must try to spell. As of this spring, I have been splitting the classes in half with my colleague, Anika.
2. 1-1s
I specialise in 1-1s tuition for year 4 and 5 students who are applying for their 10+ and 11+ exams. My classes undergo meticulous planning and preparation and I can be flexible with scheduling classes to work around students’ and parents’ busy schedules. I have prepared students for Buckinghamshire and Kent schools as well as Hampton School, Tiffin School, Kingston Grammar School and St Olave’s Grammar School. If I am requested to train a student for an exam of a school I have not yet taught, I undertake extensive research to prepare each student for the specific requirements of that particular exam. I have had lots of positive feedback from these sessions. For example, one student (who had always scored higher in maths before 1-1s) was accepted to his top choice of school after his Buckinghamshire exam and received a higher score in English than in maths.
3. Intensive Courses
I have taught several group classes over Easter and summer which train students in SPAG, comprehension and creative writing.
About Me
1. Education
I attended secondary school in rural Yorkshire where I achieved an average grade of 8.3 in my GCSEs which entailed 9s in English Language and English Literature. At college, I completed my A Levels and an Extended Project Qualification (a long project and essay on a specialised subject).
Classical Civilisation = A
English Literature = A*
Extended Project Qualification = A*
Politics = A*
I am currently in my third year studying ‘Politics’ at The University of Edinburgh. This entails research essays and book reviews which progress my literary capabilities even further. If a political issue is ever raised by a student, please be assured that I will maintain a neutral stance.
2. Experience
Although this is my first job tutoring, I have an abundance of experience working professionally. As a child, I worked on children’s TV shows as an extra (with the occasional speaking part). At school, I worked as a waitress in a local restaurant and volunteered as a cashier in the local charity shop. Throughout my years at college, I worked as a cashier in a shop and exhibition.
3. Hobbies
From a young age, I have been involved in theatre productions which has acquainted me with many classic works of literature. For example, I have taken parts in ‘Wuthering Heights’, ’Twelfth Night’ and ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.
Conclusion
I find working for Star Gleam Education an extremely fulfilling job; I endeavour to help students achieve their academic goals.
